Alex Melgarejo

The Murders in the Rue Morgue

For my thesis, I was inspired to reimagine Edgar Allan Poe’s murder mystery The Murders in the Rue Morgue through dark, gritty, and moody illustrations.

To immerse viewers into this peculiar story, I chose the traditional medium of graphite to evoke the visual aesthetics of the time period. Through these dramatic and noir influenced illustrations, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in 19th century Paris, France and to uncover the seemingly unexplainable case of the murders in the Rue Morgue.

Bio

My name is Alex Melgarejo, I am a New York based artist temporarily residing in Portland, Maine. My work is illustrative, incorporating traditional methods with the use of graphite and ink. I devote myself wholly to my craft to ensure my vision is translated onto paper. I enjoy depicting dramatic lighting in my work through a stylized but realism based noir lens.
