Solar Eclipse: The
Bloodsucker Tour Retrospective

In 2001, the infamous band Solar Eclipse burst onto the alternative scene like bats out of hell-literally.

Accompanied by shocking visuals and an unshakeable bond, they emerged from Silicon Valley seemingly overnight, building a reputation and cult following fed on a steady diet of house shows and fan engagement. In just four years, Dale, Reed, Michael, Ricky, and controversial drummer Icarus built a reputation capable of shaping bands that went on to define the genre.

And then, in 2005, they disappeared, never to be seen again.

The real kicker? The beloved Solar Eclipse never existed at all.

For my thesis, I created Solar Eclipse, a fictional vampire rock band, implementing alternative methods of storytelling that encourage audiences to directly participate and engage with their story. Utilizing a style reminiscent of museum and gift shop displays, I provide a space for viewers to interact in a way that feels familiar and inviting. Props, costumes, and ephemera provide non-textual information that invites an almost forensic investigation when combined with the mystery of disappearance.

Solar Eclipse: The Bloodsucker Tour Retrospective details Solar Eclipse's first--and last-cross-country tour, and invites the viewer to go deep-maybe deeper than they've ever gone before.

Bio

Alex Rice (he/they) is a multimedia sculpture artist working in as many mediums as he can get his hands on. His preferred method of making can range anywhere from found object assemblage, to welding, spray paint, and weaving. These varied mediums routinely circle back to textiles and the processes that create them, as well as how to use those methods in ways not considered correct.
Alex is originally from Central NY, and now lives and works in Maine. He does not know what is next, except for working full time to pay off the massive debt of art school.
