Longing the Distance

In Longing the Distance, I depict my long-distance relationship with my fiancé by taking photographs. My fiancé is active duty in the military, and we will have seen each other 55 days out of our 1,276-day-long engagement. As a result of my longing for my fiance, I have sought after objects that have materialized my emotions, and my romantic relationship has henceforth become the backbone of my photographic work.

My work revolves around the uncertainties I’ve been asked, my fears that live in the darkest corners of my mind, and the delusion that I’ve been told I live in. Longing the Distance explores the emotions that my long-distance relationship presents within myself, while introducing my body to the series and capitalizing on the longing and hardships that I’ve experienced during my engagement.

Bio

Born and raised in southern Maine, Bailey Conant is a fine art photographer. She knew she wanted to be a photographer in high school. She began her BFA in Photography at the Maine College of Art and Design in the fall of 2020 and is expected to graduate in May 2024. As Conant works toward her BFA thesis, she photographs her long-distance relationship. She met her fiance, who is in the US Army, in high school. When she isn’t taking photos describing her relationship, she talks to her fiance as often as possible and makes time for virtual movie dates.
