Mature Magic #playinadulthood

My Illustration thesis investigates the relationship between play and adulthood by creating moments that capture adults PLAYING.

Through research and development, I learned there are social stigmas and taboos surrounding maturity. On the cusp of “adulting”, I question the definitions and meanings of adulthood. I chose an editorial approach in these illustrations to create an open dialogue of what might be considered “adult play”. These scenes are based on stories shared by friends.
I emphasize the timelessness of play by using traditional pen and ink that has a nostalgic appeal; a reminder of childhood illustrations and stories. I invite the viewer to consider their own relationship to play through Mature Magic.

Bio

Hi. My name is Bella May and I am an illustrator based in Portland Maine. My work usually has a rustic and traditional style with hints of humor, as I primarily work in black and white or with muted colors. Using pen and ink, I achieve high rendering of details and dramatic contrasts that add to the traditional atmosphere of my works. I love connecting directly with the people in my community, so please stop by my table during First Friday and check out my work. If you wanna see some of the work and fine details I get into, please follow me on instagram or check out my website!
