Anarchos Animalia
Anarchos Animalia hybridizes punk rock aesthetics with zoological references. I’ve chosen six misunderstood animal species from a variety of habitats and looked to translate their characteristics into garments via color palette, silhouette, and material choice. The Feral Hog, Yellowjacket, Spotted Hyena, Black Rat, Leopard Seal and Goblin Shark have each been interpreted into clothing. While some of these species have been well documented throughout human history, others have been discovered more recently and therefore lack human-imposed archetypes. The more recently discovered the species, the more I deviated from the stereotypical punk-rock form. The look for the Spotted Hyena, an animal with extensive paleontological history, adheres closest to traditional punk-rock aesthetics, whereas the look for the Goblin Shark, a species discovered in 1898, uses silhouettes and color palettes alien to textbook moshers and headbangers. Furthermore, design choices have been made based on data like habitat and biology. For example, the Leopard Seal outfit uses softer, sleeker meshes and faux furs and by contrast the Yellowjacket look uses faux-leather to communicate its tough exoskeleton. The Feral Hog look includes a power-tool reminiscent faux-leather jacket coated in steel hardware to communicate its adaptation to man’s urban habitats.
Anarchos Animalia makes people question and reevaluate their perspectives and reinterpret how they judge these animals.
Bio
Drako Demise is a fashion designer whose work and philosophy stems from anarchist theory, the skate-punk subculture and its coinciding DIY ethic.Drako Demise has always wanted something more. He has put himself out there as a fashion designer and model during his time in Portland, selling his work at local retailer Strange Maine and at every local craft sale and flea market he can attend. Despite his levels of education (and how pretentious it can appear to some in the punk scene), Demise intends on keeping true to his roots and giving back to the subculture. Demise’ surface level goals are to create exciting and affordable clothing and apparel for Portland’s small but blossoming scene, but his greater machination is to help the local scene blossom more fully by creating a culture and location that inspires creativity and DIY ethics in those engaged with his creations.
