Oshun and Visions of the Sea

My thesis, Oshun and Visions of the Sea deals with my emotions towards the ocean; dichotomy of fear versus enchantment. This installation represents the good days and feeling fine, while telling the story about my father that had departed to Nigeria. For me to never have seen the motherland but craving to go there, and seeing what beauties I’m missing in my own life. The three dresses represent missing pieces of myself I wish I had. The satin represents happiness, the shiny orange represents my imagination. The distance between me and my father is also represented through the pink satin dress. The kaftan dresses are referencing West African culture. Living in New England is different when you never have a chance to visit the ocean as much. I love the Cape Cod beaches where you can go past the shore line. I remember the enchanting feelings of being there. Where the high tide departs you can walk as much as you want. My love for the sea feels like my love for my father that has recently departed. I loved swimming at a young age, going to the beaches and pools. Where you can explore in a comforting way to reflect about the good and bad. I remember spending birthdays there with the waves crashing. I feel like I was born in the sea and the sea has seen me change from a young age to the age I am now. To love the sea but, from my past installation, to fear it at the same time. Overall, Oshun and Visions of the Sea conveys a safe space just for me and my love for the ocean.
