Jess Kimball

PJ

PJ is an abstract, character-based exploration of disconnect, dysmorphia, and getting to know oneself created through varying forms of animation and media. Through the character of PJ, a brightly-costumed being that teeters between human and animal, one can observe the life they live–disjointed, nonsensical, and ever-changing–and how they respond to the circumstances they find themselves in, exemplified through the juxtaposition of digital and traditional mediums coming together.

As a human, I have always struggled with understanding the world around me in a body I wish I did not inhabit. As an artist especially, I have found it hard to have both myself and my work be perceived. PJ, both the character and the piece, is a direct reflection of these feelings and an homage to coming to terms with who I am: a being who wants to play, explore, and love.

Bio

Jess Kimball is a Portland, Maine based animator with a focus in character, 2D and stop motion animation. Originally from Vernon, New Jersey, Jess continues to hold a fascination towards animation that has been with them since childhood, which is reflected in the playful and explorative nature of their work. Using their thesis to fully immerse themself into many different mediums and styles of animation, Jess hopes to experiment further in their personal practice post-grad, making engaging, visually interesting, and meaningful work, as well as continuing to collaborate with and learn from others.
