Amor Familiar

In Amor Familiar, I'm expressing my admiration for Texas and my Hispanic lineage, drawing inspiration from my home state's rich cultural heritage and my family's rigorous work ethic. This collection pays homage to matadors, mariachis, luchadors, dancers (notably the jarabe tapatío), and the traditional attire of Mexico while preserving the garments' functional significance.
However, it deviates from the traditional garments through the use of a grayscale color palette. This palette is sourced from the black and white television that I watched as a child, and also represents my distorted visual experience as someone with an astigmatism.

The circular motif is sourced from my visual abnormality which distorts my vision with circular patterns. This motif replaces the traditionally intricate embroidery and appliqué. The hand-stitched circles, arranged in grids proportional to the garment, honor the labor put in by highly specialized craftspeople.

Relocating across the country has provided me with perspective, allowing me to reflect on cherished memories and people. Amor Familiar is a heartfelt tribute to the cultures of Texas and Mexico. My collection is grounded in a profound reverence for the enduring labor that surrounds my family and serves as a testament to the resilience of my paternal lineage.
