Celestial Gestures
Celestial Gestures is a musical movement performance featuring garments I have designed and created for unique performers. It represents how we are all interwoven; we share the same experiences though we express ourselves differently. The performer's differences are celebrated, and unified through the experience. The performance is improvisational and explores the subconscious mind. This allows the performers and audience to surrender and sever any ties of expectancy, allowing the present moment to unfold. This surrender embodies the psychedelic experience and the dissolution of ego, feeling oneness and omnipresence. There is consistency and interconnectedness with each look through the textile choices, while specific shapes and silhouettes emphasize each performer's distinct gestures. Jacquard woven textiles are a metaphor for layers of perception and intersecting identities, while fabric scraps and discarded yarn celebrate authentic expression. Corduroy and pintucking symbolize repetition and structure in heteronormative society. I also use screen printing to create an optical illusion in conjunction with pintucking to represent the illusion of heteronormative success. I juxtapose rigidity with flowy fabrics to illuminate Queer freedom and hippie counterculture which break societal standards. By combining improvisational performance with rigid and flowy textiles, I am celebrating queerness and surrendering to divine intervention.
