Don't Overthink It

I want to make you laugh–It’s how I connect with people. As a cartoonist making a 2D animated short film, the hours hunched over notebooks, sketchbooks, and a drawing tablet has that end goal of making you laugh. Humor is humanity’s shared awkwardness and uncomfortable truths–everyone has a first date story. The scene usually goes the same: establish contact, get to know someone, choose a location … wait. Inside that period of waiting is where fear strikes. Fear and anxiety that propels you to some wild imaginings.

First dates are a great source of apprehension. But, they can have the potential to be rewarding. Hence, inspiration struck me for a comedy short dealing with just that. The idea struck me all at once at the end of summer break–someone waiting for a date to show up and all the horrible ways he imagines the date going. The same imaginings went into the process of making this short with countless sketches, drafts of storyboards, and then the realization of actual animation. Animation is accessible. It’s the reason why this film is published online, it’s for everyone–especially those who’ve struggled through a first date.
