Having a chance to inspire a new generation of kids and young minds through the means of a tv show; that's my dream. As an artist I strive to improve my skills in the animation pipeline from going from a blank canvas to a room overflowing with ideas that can't be contained. That is what I achieved here. ‘DUM-e’ is a project that I have crafted for more than 2 years, trying to take a basic doodle on a sticky note and produce it to an animated pilot for the world to see. As someone who exists within a disabled body, I mediate intersecting identities through the process of printmaking; printing under tremendous pressure is reminiscent of my marginalized experience. These narratives of reclamation in the series center around themes of personal and ecological resilience, and offer empowerment and understanding for those with my disorder. The various processes of printmaking are laborious and intensive, which mirrors the labor that comes with processing traumatic events. I view the printmaking process as a unifying and healing act, and I hope my work gives the viewer perspective on the joys and trials of living in a disabled body. Bio Ana Lucia Amaral is a Queer, Puerto Rican printmaker who lives and works in Portland, Maine. Amaral has had work featured at 82 Parris Gallery and gallery spaces at MECA&amp;D and the University of Vermont. They primarily practice intaglio printmaking, screenprinting, and lithography to reclaim traumatic events. They enjoy being outside (especially in marshy ecosystems), cutting their bangs too short, and spending time with their best friends, Max and Claire. Investigating an impressionist style, I interacted with non-conforming spaces such as queer dances, gay bars, cosplay raves, and conventions– aiming to capture the atmosphere within each encounter. Expression through incorporating costumes allows us to display and enhance aspects of our authentic selves. My work is about the connections that are made between the LGBTQ+ communities of the past that paved the way for the new generation and our creative art forms. In opposition to years of queer erasure, using dazzling performances and visual flaggings creates space for remembrance. BioAdam Anderson is an artist born and raised in the pine barrens of New Jersey. His artistic practices encompass a wide breadth of expression; including photography, costuming, and traditional painting. Anderson explores many different themes in his work such as gender expression, narrative storytelling, self-portraiture, and identity. One of his favorite hobbies is cosplay, making costumes and going to anime conventions since 2015. Adam Anderson is an active member of their community, helping organize events such as queer dances. I don’t think it would be a stretch to say that I spent more time reading about video games than actually playing them during my formative years. This has manifested into a passion for preserving the less appreciated and more obscure aspects of gaming–manuals, magazines, etc.–as well as towards my general skillset as an artist. Now, as an adult, I have begun to create many of the things that I appreciated in games as a child- such as character designs and animations.My thesis project, Flourman, is an exploration of a concept I had for a retro-style 3D platforming game. Flourman has its roots in the colorful “collectathon” style of platforming video games, seen in titles such as Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, as well as an influence from the many games that I played/ experienced as part of my childhood. This project contains a playable demo, showcasing what the game might look / play like, and an art book showing the many concepts that were not used in the demo. For twenty years of my life, engaging in conversation with another, listening to them and sharing with each other was the easiest thing I could do. In August of 2022, I started to lose my hearing. Everything that I had known about how to listen and share with another was completely overwritten by the new reality I faced. There are times where even if I devote all my energy into listening to someone, I will not understand the words they were saying. I felt robbed of my means to communicate and relate with others. In my thesis, I invite you to experience my world. A space where all you can do is try your hardest to listen and understand everything being said. I’m tired of always listening. The adventure of LUMA reflects the lived experiences of its developers Rita Brederson and Phoenix Stroh as they explore themes of unconventional housing, identity, and growing up. LUMA acts as a synthesis of the duo’s previous projects and expands on new ideas to be a more thoughtful and striking conclusion to 3 years of collaboration. The scope of our thesis and our history of work together called for a larger collaboration between the studio and others around the school. The two not only had the help of animation juniors and an illustration major, but spoke to other students about their own lived experiences growing up. While the journey of Luma concludes by finding their home, and our time at MECA&amp;D ending, we look forward to continuing to build on our history together and the greater game community. BioRita Brederson and Phoenix Stroh are indie game developers and artists interested in making small experiences. Rita is a 3D generalist, pixel artist, and animator who explores whimsical styles and themes. Phoenix Stroh is a programmer and technical artist interested in making tools for game development and creating novel visual effects using technology. Together as 5’4 Games, the duo has worked on a variety of games, often collaborating with other creators. I truly took thesis as an opportunity to do all the things I love: listening to music, collaging, and drawing portraits. All together, these ideas led to me making a magazine and doing editorial art about local musicians. I did a lot of the sketching reportage-style by bringing my sketchbook to live musical performances. This was my gateway to meeting many Maine musicians that I would later interview for my magazine called Mainely Music. These artists shared a similar musical foundation to me, growing up playing music with others. Personally, I was in band, chorus, and theater. All of these extracurriculars were not only therapeutic to me, but also allowed me to connect with my community. That’s what Mainely Music is all about. You don’t have to be the talented people on the stage to feel grounded to the strangers in the room. Let the music be the thread that stitches and binds together the souls in the room. Community is intensely important to the human experience and I believe this rings true in my final work. BioEmmy Grace Burnham grew up in rural Maine. Inspired by the collaged scrapbooks her mom made, she’s carried a sketchbook everywhere with her. She would often sketch the people seen around her in life. From the comfort of her bedroom, she would also draw and make collages themed around the music that was constantly spilling out of her headphones. Growing up in the school band, chorus, and theater, music became one of the biggest themes in her artwork. This collection pays homage to matadors, mariachis, luchadors, dancers (notably the jarabe tapatío), and the traditional attire of Mexico while preserving the garments' functional significance.However, it deviates from the traditional garments through the use of a grayscale color palette. This palette is sourced from the black and white television that I watched as a child, and also represents my distorted visual experience as someone with an astigmatism. The circular motif is sourced from my visual abnormality which distorts my vision with circular patterns. This motif replaces the traditionally intricate embroidery and appliqué. The hand-stitched circles, arranged in grids proportional to the garment, honor the labor put in by highly specialized craftspeople. Relocating across the country has provided me with perspective, allowing me to reflect on cherished memories and people. Amor Familiar is a heartfelt tribute to the cultures of Texas and Mexico. My collection is grounded in a profound reverence for the enduring labor that surrounds my family and serves as a testament to the resilience of my paternal lineage. BioIn the pursuit of their craft, Lucas Cadena is driven by a steadfast commitment to honoring tradition while embracing innovation. Inspired by artisans like Andrea Zittel and historical labor dynamics, they strive to infuse each creation with a timeless quality that transcends fleeting trends and speaks to the universal language of artistry.
